The Regiment Brandenburg was first formed in August 1939 and initially designated as a "Special Unit" (Sonderverband z.b.d. 800) and named after its original garrison town. Regiment Brandenburg was used as a commando unit at the outset of the war under the direct control of the Army OKW's Counter Intelligence department. Later reorganized to division strength, it was renamed "Division Brandenburg" in April 1943 as part of Panzerkorps Grossdeutschland. In September 1944, the division was renamed Panzergrenadierdivision Brandenberg. This very rare cufftitle was first authorized for wear on August 17, 1944 making a late war honor cufftitle as very few German Army cufftitles were authorized to be worn by divisions. This cufftitle measures approximately 18. inches in length. The embroidered Brandenburg name is on dark green wool and is bordered with Russian braid. The upper and lower borders are Russian braid. On either side of KRETA is the acanthus decorative motif with seven leaves to each side. This rare campaign award was presented to mainly Luftwaffe personnel who participated in the Kreta operation which cost the Fallschirmjager branch such heavy casualties that Hitler ordered no more large scale Fallschirmjager operations.
